Wings

Show us how to fly

We start our life
full of courage
and young hope.

We are told
we are perfect
up to the first fault.

We pick up the guilt
we’re told we deserve,
trusting its weight
adds to our worth.

But it keeps our nose down,
feet stuck to the ground
and dreams out of reach.

Too heavy to aim for the sky,
it takes the fury of a storm
to show us again how to fly.

We work our way up
slowly shaping
a path to our dreams.

But think how far we could go
if you give us wings
instead of stones.

This poem started as an exercise in my own journey of overcoming perfectionism. I often speak about overcoming obstacles in my projects, as we always need wings to get to our dreams. As adults, we learn how to travel lighter, but we can also learn how to unburden the path for others.
