Animation, Illustration & Design by IRINA MARIN-PERIANU
I thought everyone could picture anything they wanted in their imagination. But it turns out our minds produce images in different ways. And some people can’t form mental images at all. We didn’t even have a name for this until 2015: aphantasia (being unable to generate voluntary mental images) and its opposite, hyperphantasia (having extremely vivid mental imagery).
It was very difficult to illustrate this concept as it's hard to understand or describe exactly what one sees. But I wanted to make this short animation for Aphantasia Awareness Day as a reminder never to assume, always ask, always stay curious.
